l'Atomium!!!

Here's a short story of the atomium taken from: http://www.pbase.com/henkbinnendijk/atomium ...
The Atomium in the Heysel Park in Brussels was constructed by architect André Waterkeyn for the 1958 World Fair in Brussels. It is a model of a crystalline metal molecule, magnified 150 billion times. It was intended to `symbollize faith in scientific progress and peaceful cooperation among nations´. The structure is 103 meters tall. The nine spheres representing the individual atoms are hollow, and measure 18 meters across. The connecting tubes are 3 meters wide. Vistors can travel around in the Atomium using escalators and strairways. The upper sphere offers a panoramic view of the city of Brussels, and the other spheres are often used for expositions. The structure was not intended to be permanent, but its popularity has motivated the Belgian government to find funds for its continual renewal and upkeep.

If you click the photo to enlarge and are able to zoom in REALLY close on the center top sphere, you will see a man standing at the restaurant window; that will give you an idea of the building's scale...

The money shot :) For those of you into photography, this is about an 8 sec. exposure at f1.8. The glowing orange objects are clouds moving by after 20 minutes or so of rain... Thank goodness for tripods!

This is my favorite image of the whole photo shoot.

Thanks Bro! The bike was named Blue Steel, even though she is mainly aluminum. I may come up with a more intimate name, but only once we get to know one another better ;) She is the sister bike to Man Called Scratch's Red Dragon, which is currently being ridden in South Beach...
